Have you ever wanted to learn more about how to detoxify your body but were overwhelmed by all the choices out there, where to begin, or how to integrate the program into your already busy schedule? Maybe you began a program but did not finish, feeling even more discouraged and depleted of the energy you were seeking. So what went wrong?
Here’s the Problem:
There are some great detoxification programs out there but they are difficult to incorporate into your daily life. If you do not understand how your body detoxifies and how to practically support these processes, than value is not added to support you in sticking to the plan.
We need to define how your body becomes toxic, what are the systems in your body that help you to detoxify and then give you a simple plan that you can incorporate into your daily life that will support these systems; leaving you with purpose and increased vitality 365 days a year.
Are We All Toxic?
Yes, we are all toxic. It is impossible to avoid all toxins in our environment without being in a bubble. So, what are these toxins and where can you find them?
Food contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, hormones, antibiotics and food additives
Air pollution from diesel, carbon monoxide from fuel combustion and industrial plant emissions
Homes contaminated with lead, asbestos, toxic cleaning agents, mold and dust
Chronic food allergies and disease states that cause toxic by-products
Medications that stress our systems of detoxification
Luckily, you have several body systems that have been designed to protect you from the damaging effects of environmental toxins.
How Your Body Detoxifies
Respiration: breathing helps to eliminate by-products of metabolism such as carbon dioxide which helps to balance the pH of your blood
Liver: filters your blood and then disposes of toxins into your intestines to be excreted via your feces or into tissues like fat to protect you from harmful levels of toxins in your blood
Kidneys: they filter and eliminate toxins and metabolic by-products through your urine
Sweating: our sweat helps to eliminate toxins such as heavy metals and metabolic by-products
Gastrointestinal: our digestive system processes and eliminates toxins and metabolic by-products through bowel movements
Reducing Toxin Exposure
Eat organic versus conventional food to avoid pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, antibiotics and hormones
Eat whole foods like fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, organic meat, wild-caught fish, nuts and seeds rather than processed food to avoid food additives and food toxins like high fructose corn syrup and nitrates
Improve indoor air quality by contacting American Lung Association at www.lungusa.org or your city or county health department for local environmental toxins
Identify and remove food allergens by contacting a naturopathic physician (symptoms of food allergy and toxicity can include fatigue, congestion, post-nasal drip, frequent sinus infections, headaches, plugged ears, gas and bloating)
Simple One Week Detoxification Guidelines
Begin by drinking half your body weight in ounces with fresh lemon juice. I do one half lemon juiced per day and add it to my water.
Eat only organic whole foods (see above). This means no fast food or highly processed foods including organic ready-made meals that have additives and preservatives. Avoid meat preserved with nitrates like lunch and cured meats. Lunch meat that does not have nitrates is fine (quick tip: wrap nitrate-free lunch meat in romaine lettuce with oil soaked olives and fresh tomato and avocado).
Avoid refined sugar, alcohol and caffeine including chocolate and coffee. Sweeteners like honey, agave nectar and stevia are fine. Do not use artificial sweeteners like Equal, Splenda or NutraSweet as these are toxic to your liver and nervous system.
Take a fiber supplement like psyllium or flax meal (found in the health food section of most grocery stores) away from food at night before bed. The serving size should have approximately 5-8 grams of fiber and should not have any sugar or food coloring added. If you need to enhance the flavor add it to fresh juice.
Exercise moderately to enhance circulation and increase sweating for release of toxins. Sauna or hot Epsom salt baths (4 cups per bath for 30-60 minutes) in additions to exercise are great ways to increase sweating and release of toxins. Remember to hydrate well if you are sweating in a sauna, bath or with exercise to avoid dehydration. I recommend 30-60 minutes of exercise 3-5 times per week. If you are just starting out, begin slow and work up to this goal. If you have circulation problems consult your physician before starting an exercise program or going into a sauna or hot bath for extended periods of time.

My unique vantage point as a naturopathic physician allows me to teach you about not only your physical, but your mental, emotional and spiritual health that makes you distinctively human.
I started my journey on a small farm in the foothills of Mount Rainier. My parents fostered in my siblings and me qualities such as compassion, stewardship, hard work and balance. It was from this rich beginning that I found my passion for helping others. I quickly realized that I wanted to become a physician. I earned my bachelor of science in Exercise Science at the University of Puget Sound and my doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from Bastyr University. This helped me to develop my unique approach of both intellectual and intuitive. I now have the joy of teaching my patients and the public about the intricate and interwoven relationship between good food, exercise, emotional, mental and spiritual practices.
My passion to teach others not only to live a life of quantity but of quality, stemmed from experiencing the pain of losing my mother to cancer when I was eighteen years old. This led me to volunteer with hospice which further taught me about living a quality life with no regrets. I continue to learn this lesson from my patients and am able in turn to guide them in reaching their health goals.
